RPN Singh joined the BJP leader a day ago, prompting a sharp reaction from Congress leaders, including Supriya Shrine, the party’s spokesperson, who called him a “coward.”
New Delhi, India A day after Congress leader RPN Singh joined the BJP, his former party colleague Shashi Tharoor mocked the ruling party with a rhyme and a quip on the BJP’s catchphrase.
“Congress-mukt Bharat” (Congress-free India), declaring it was now “Congress-yukt BJP” (Congress-powered BJP).
On Tuesday, Mr. Singh quit the Congress party and joined the BJP, the latest setback for the grand old party just weeks before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
The 57-year-old leader, who served as a union minister during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s second term, joined the BJP at its headquarters, prompting a sharp reaction from Congress leaders, including its spokesperson Supriya Shrine, who called him a “coward.”
Mr. Tharoor took to Twitter on Wednesday to say in Hindi, “‘Chorh Kar ja rahe hain Ghar Apna, shayad unke Kuch aur Sapne hain, ab udhar bhi sab Apna sa hai, ab udhar bhi to sabhi apne hain, ab udhar bhi to sabhi Apne (Congress-backed BJP)’”
“He is leaving his home, maybe he has other dreams; now there also feels homely, there are our people,” the tweet roughly translates.
Responding to Mr. Tharoor, Pawan Khera, national spokesperson for the Congress, said in a Hindi tweet, “One who cannot be true to his ideology cannot be our own.” Borrowing from the Bhagavad Gita, Mr. Khera stated, “We have to defeat those who divide people in 80-20, Arjun; don’t look for your people there, don’t look for dreams; there.”
Mr. Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi after joining the BJP, saying the Congress is not the same party he worked for for 32 years and wants to contribute to the nation’s development.
