Success Of Operation Ganga “Mahasweta Chakraborty“
Jagran Trending Desk, New Delhi: Several Indian students studying in Ukraine were stranded due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The Indian government launched ‘Operation Ganga‘ to evacuate those stranded students from Ukraine.
Operation Ganga was a rescue plan that brought thousands of Indian citizens back from Ukraine.
During that operation, Mahasweta Chakraborty, a 24-year pilot for a private Indian carrier, brought back Indian students who had become stranded in war-torn Ukraine. The pilot flew six flights to evacuate over 800 students.
Mahasweta Chakraborty, from Kolkata, has four years of experience in the aviation industry. She flew six flights between February 27 and March 7, after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the “special military operation” in Ukraine.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, rescuing those students in their late teens and early twenties, many of whom had fallen sick and had traumatising survival stories,” Mahasweta Chakraborty was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
The pilot also stated that she was required to fly an Airbus A320 for 13-14 hours per day. It didn’t matter to her because she was determined to save those students who had “relived their horror” and were desperate to return home.
She also revealed an incident in which a 21-year-old girl had fits due to a stressful situation.
“I’ll never forget the moment she clutched my hand in a semi-conscious state and asked me to simply take her to her mother,” Mahasweta Chakraborty said.
“I received a call late at night from my airline informing me that I had been selected for the rescue operation.” “I finished packing in two hours and left,” she added.
Mahasweta was also a member of the Vande Bharat mission during the pandemic. During the Vande Bharat mission, Mahasweta flew oxygen concentrators from abroad and vaccines from Pune to Kolkata and other airports. Mahasweta is an Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi graduate.
